Singing Improves Your Foreign Language Speaking Ability (02-08-2013)

Singing Improves Your Foreign Language Speaking Ability (02-08-2013)

Have you ever blushed while speaking English in front of non-Koreans? Even though you have studied English for many years, you can still be speechless if you run into people from another country. Isn’t there any easy and fun way to improve your English speaking ability? Recently, researchers from the United Kingdom found the answer for you!

Researchers from the University of Edinburgh discovered that people who learned a foreign language by singing songs in that language were better at speaking it. The researchers think that the speaking ability gets better by listening to the words sung and singing the words back. Lead researcher Dr. Katie Overy said, “We found singing was more much effective, particularly when it came to the spoken language tests.”

They conducted a test on people learning Hungarian. Participants listened to the words and then repeated the words back. Some repeated the words after listening to a tape, some said them rhythmically, and the others sung the words. After 15 minutes, they took tests to see how well they learned the words, and the participants who learned the words through singing scored highest. In addition, they could remember the words longer than others. If you want to speak better English, then try singing in English!
