On May 20, a deadly tornado swept through the suburbs of Oklahoma City, killing 24 people and causing an estimated $2 billion worth of damages.

Crews are currently working to clear the debris and are looking for missing people. Although thunderstorms, damaged roads, and heavy traffic have been making their jobs difficult, rescue workers vowed to continue.
In Washington, President Barack Obama promised that Americans would stand by Oklahoma during the rebuilding process. “There are empty spaces where there used to be living rooms and bedrooms and classrooms,” he said. “And in time, we’re going to need to refill those spaces with love and laughter and community.”

Ten of the victims were children. Some were from an elementary school in Moore, the suburb that was hit the hardest. The school was destroyed, but emergency workers managed to rescue most of the students and take the injured to hospitals.
Oklahoma is no stranger to tornadoes. The state is located in the part of the country known as Tornado Alley, an area where tornadoes occur most frequently. However, this tornado was unusually strong. It measured EF-4 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, the second-highest category. Its wind speed was estimated between 273 to 321 kilometers per hour. And according to experts, the tornado was about 3.2 kilometers wide and lasted for around 40 minutes.

Amazing CAr

Have you ever imagined that you might ride in a flying car someday? You might wish this when you are stuck in a traffic jam. Guess what! It is no longer just a dream. Recently, a company called Terrafugia announced its vision for the future of personal transportation. According to experts, a flying car will be available to the public within 10 years! So what kind of car is it?

The vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) flying car is called “TF-X.” The maximum seating capacity of the car is four. It can do a maximum speed of around 322km per hour. TF-X, also known as an eco-friendly hybrid car, is equipped with both an electric motor and a gasoline engine.

How can the car fly in the sky? The secret are wings that are hidden in its body. The wings come out when the car takes off. The car can fly for up to 800km on a single charge. It is said that anyone will be able to drive it, because the car has artificial intelligence technology. It is simpler and safer than a light plane, and you do not need a pilot’s licenseto fly it. It also has a detailed and automaticnavigation system.

“Terrafugia is about increasing the level of safety, simplicity, and convenience of aviation. TF-X is an opportunity to provide the world with a new dimension of personal freedom,” said Terrafugia CEO Carl Dietrich.

UN: Eat More Bugs!

What do you eat when you’re hungry? Some of you might enjoy munching on a healthy snack, like fresh fruits and vegetables. Others may grab a bag of chips or eat a cup of ramen. While all of these foods are delicious choices, the next time you’re hungry, why don’t you try a handful of insects? Not only are they low-fat and high in protein, but according to the United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO)UN식량농업기구, “Insects are a highly nutritious and a healthy food source with vitamin, fiber, and mineral content.” In fact, a report recently released by the FAO encourages people to eat more insects. Their reasons are threefold. First, eating insects will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and livestock pollution. Insects emit fewer greenhouse gases than most livestock. In addition, farming insects does not require the clearing of land. This may help slow deforestation. Farming insects is also low-tech, costs little money, and can be done by anyone, even by the poorest members of society. Second, insects are healthy, nutritious alternatives to chicken, pork, beef, and fish. “They provide high-quality protein and nutrients when compared with meat and fish and are particularly important as a food supplement for undernourished children,” the report stated. Lastly, the world’s population is set to grow to 9 billion by 2050. Eating more insects could combat food scarcity.

Today, an estimated 2 billion people worldwide?mostly in Asia, Africa, and Latin America? cons of their daily diet.
According to the FAO, beetles and caterpillars are the ume insects as part most common meals among the more than 1,900 edible insect species that people eat. Other popular insect foods include bees, ants, grasshoppers, locusts, and crickets. The two species of insects that are among the least popular are termites and flies.

Doug Yanega, a scientist at the University of California, Riverside and an expert on consuming edible bugs, also recommends scorpions and water bugs. “Some scorpions and water bugs are yummy, and honey bees are perfectly delicious,” he said. He also agrees with FAO’s report. “The UN report is perfectly logical, but it’s tough to convince people.”

Are you convinced? Do you think this idea will catch on in Korea?
